A Novel Idea from ChiLibris

When I saw that some of my favorite authors of Christian fiction, like Francine Rivers and Karen Kingsbury, were sharing their experience and knowledge in A Novel Idea*, it became a “must read” for me. I initially wanted to read this book to discover more about the authors’ personal stories and how they began their writing careers. I’ve never considered myself to be much of a writer. Once in a while, I’ll write a blog post that turns out to be somewhat entertaining.

After reading A Novel Idea, I began to actually consider writing an inspirational novel. This book is well organized and written for even the most inexperienced writer. It covers the fundamentals and development of writing in a way that is practical and easy to understand. Then it takes you through the ins and outs of networking and marketing.

I don’t know if I will truly ever write a Christian novel, but I now believe that it is possible with the help of well-known authors, such as Randy Alcorn, Terri Blackstock, Angela Hunt and so many others who contributed to this incredible resource, called A Novel Idea.

Book Summary: Best-selling Christian fiction writers have teamed together to contribute articles on the craft of writing. A Novel Idea contains tips on brainstorming ideas and crafting and marketing a novel. It explains what makes a Christian novel Christian and offers tips on how to approach tough topics. Contributors include Jerry B. Jenkins, Karen Kingsbury, Francine Rivers, and many other beloved authors. All proceeds will benefit MAI, an organization that teaches writing internationally to help provide literature that is culturally relevant.

You can purchase your own copy of A Novel Idea here.

IRL & JOY

Today was a significant day for me, a milestone of sorts, where I was allowed to see God's hand at work in this journey I've been on for the past several years. First, I received a phone call this morning that held more spiritual significance and symbolism for me than anyone else involved will ever fully know or understand. I truly cannot quite wrap my brain around it myself. It's the kind of event that is so personal - so huge - that I am reluctant to even share the details because I know that no one else will really "get it", especially when I cannot even grasp it myself.

Next, the precious woman in the photo above, who was once an online friend, became a friend In Real Life (IRL) over lunch. I am so thankful for this new relationship and that God has allowed our paths to cross. I cannot begin to tell you how excited I was to finally get to meet her.

Which brings me to the whole IRL thing...

Many of us who live part of our daily lives in cyberspace often classify our friendships as online/internet vs. IRL. I feel the need to say that my online friends ARE real. These friendships are as real and significant in my life as the ones I come face-to-face with physically. The only drawback is that I have to type ((HUGS)) instead of getting to hug their necks. The online Bible study group that I have been participating in for the past 5 weeks is as authentic as any other that I have facilitated in my home or attended in another's home. If anything, it is even more so, because we don't just meet one day a week; we tend to do life together every single day. It is REAL.

Believe it or not, the phone call and the lunch meeting are tied together in significance and purpose, while they were not planned together or connected in any way. Can I just say that today was HUGE for me? My heart was full.

You thought this was the end, didn't you? Nope.

After lunch, I took my sweet 5th grade student to the Space and Rocket Center. After enduring the mushy gushy meeting of online friends who have now become IRL friends, I figured he deserved a bit of fun. Plus, I can justify driving 2 hrs. to meet a friend on a school day by making it a field trip. Anyway, we had a great time exploring together. I might add that we discovered the perfect time to visit the center is between 3 and 5pm. We had the whole place to ourselves.

On the way home, the sun was setting, Travis Cottrell and the choir were praising and worshiping through my car speakers, little man was quiet in the back seat, and I was running through the day in my mind and praising God for it all in my heart. My joy was pushed over the edge of "cup full" to overflowing (like Niagara Falls) when I heard the sweetest 10 year old voice behind me say, "Momma? I had fun with you today."

Multi-Use

If you recall, I purchased The No-Cookbook Recipe Stand as a Christmas gift to myself. Now, this has become soooo much more, as I have come up with multiple uses for this nifty and aesthetically pleasing tool. The first idea that my family will be putting to use is the memory verse display. Each family member will submit one memory verse per month for the entire family to memorize. One verse will be displayed each week (since we have 4 family members) on this beautiful stand (that matches our furniture and woodwork perfectly) which sits on the kitchen table. The goal is to read or work on memorizing the verse before every meal in order to completely consume the verse by the end of the 7 day period.

Now, I must purchase several more of these Stands to use for recipes, calendars, and gifts.

Can you think of any other uses for this very versatile product?

Christmas Shopping

Instead of packing today, I decided to get a jump on some Christmas shopping. A few minutes spent looking online for some really unique stocking stuffers would not hurt, right? I may, or may not, have bought some of these quirky and cool items below:

A notepad for the obsessive Twilight fan in the family from delight.com,

Or these really cool magnetic measuring spoons for someone always searching in the bottom of a very full drawer for measuring spoons,

Or this neat recipe holder for someone who prints all of her recipes from the computer.

At fredflare.com, I found this tattoo kit for someone that has always wanted a tattoo but never had the guts to get one,
And this nifty write-on coffee mug for the multi-tasker who is constantly misplacing her sticky notes.

All of the above images are linked to the stores where they can be purchased. The people described above may, or may not, just be one and the same person who likes to help her family with their Christmas shopping.

I'm just sayin'!

About the Kids

There is one guarantee with my family. Any event is going to be focused on the kids. My mother and her best friend are two of the greatest grandparents I know. They always make sure that grandchildren have fun and feel special. For instance, yesterday, we celebrated my husband's birthday. The photos above show how the kids participated in the celebration.

What is one guarantee or special thing about your family?

Scenes of Solitude

My husband's birthday was this month, so instead of buying the typical gifts, we rented a cabin for him. Taking a couple days off from work gave us a long 4 day weekend to just rest and relax. This was the first time we'd stayed in our friends' cabin, A Frame of Mind, which is situated on Douglas Lake with the mountains in view. It was absolutely breathtaking!

The cabin is perfect for our family with 2 bedrooms and 2 baths and extremely comfortable beds. It is only a short drive to several local restaurants, and about 45 minutes to Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg. We spent most of the weekend reading, watching movies, hiking, (and I worked on One in a Million bible study). We went to Gatlinburg one day and ate at Bubba Gump's. We love that place! We also spent quite a bit of time trying to figure out how we can rent the cabin at least once a month!

I've actually been really tired, playing catch-up all week. I guess I did not realize how much I get done on the weekends. But it was all worth it. On my list of things-to-do today is to schedule another trip!
